One of the biggest mistakes tradies make with local SEO is trying to target everywhere at once. Spread yourself across 40 suburbs and you'll rank strongly in none. Focus on the right handful and you can own them. Here's how to choose.
1. Start with where you already work
Your best suburbs to target are usually the ones you already service most. You know the area, you can get there easily, and you likely already have a few local customers who can leave reviews that reinforce your presence there.
2. Weigh job value against travel time
A suburb an hour away might have great jobs, but the travel eats your margin. Prioritise areas where the balance of job value and drive time works for your business. Tight, profitable service areas beat wide, thinly-spread ones.
3. Consider demand and competition together
Some suburbs have lots of searches but heavy competition; others have less competition and are easier to rank in quickly. A good strategy usually mixes a couple of high-demand target suburbs with several lower-competition ones you can win faster.
4. Look at growth areas
New estates and growth corridors are full of homeowners who don't have a trade they trust yet. Getting in early in a growing suburb can pay off for years as the area fills up.
5. Build a real page for each one
Once you've chosen, each target suburb needs its own genuinely useful page — not a template with the suburb name swapped in. Google rewards real, specific local content, and so do customers.
