Two tradies do equally good work. One has 8 reviews, the other has 60. The customer picks the one with 60 almost every time — often without a second thought. Reviews are both a Google Maps ranking signal and the deciding factor for most customers. Here's how to build them consistently.
1. Just ask — every time
The single biggest reason tradies don't have reviews is that they don't ask. Make it a standard part of finishing a job. Most happy customers are glad to help; they simply need a nudge and an easy way to do it.
2. Make it effortless
Don't ask people to search for your business and find the review section. Send a direct link straight to your Google review page — ideally by text, a few days after the job when the result is fresh. The fewer taps, the more reviews.
3. Automate the follow-up
Relying on memory means it happens sometimes and not others. An automated message that goes out a set number of days after each completed job turns reviews into a reliable, steady stream instead of an occasional afterthought.
4. Reply to the ones you get
Thank people for positive reviews, and respond calmly and constructively to any negative ones. It shows future customers you're professional and engaged — and Google favours active profiles.
5. Never buy fake reviews
It's against Google's policies, customers can often smell it, and it puts your profile at risk of penalties. Real reviews from real jobs are the only ones worth having.
